According to the type of current generated by the EAF arc, we can divide the arc into DC arc and AC arc, that is, DC arc is generated in a DC circuit, and AC arc is generated in an AC circuit. The difference between the two lies in the direction of the current and the characteristics of the zero point.
The current direction of the AC arc changes periodically, and when the current reaches zero, the arc will extinguish;
The current direction of the DC arc remains unchanged, and the arc will not extinguish even if the current intensity drops to zero unless the current is cut off.
The main differences between AC arc furnace and DC arc furnace are the number of electrodes, power supply system, power quality, arc stability, and molten pool stirring effect.
DC arc furnaces usually have only one electrode, which is the negative electrode, and the bottom electrode is the positive electrode. In contrast, AC arc furnaces usually have two electrodes, one is the anode and the other is the cathode.
The DC EAF is equipped with a rectifier and a reactor, which makes its power quality harmonic spectrum conform to the basic law of the rectifier device and the power impact is also small.
The power supply system of the AC EAF is different. Its power quality is affected by the characteristics of the AC and may generate more harmonics and power impacts.
The power quality of the DC arc furnace is generally better than that of the AC arc furnace, because the current and voltage fluctuations of the DC arc furnace are smaller and the impact on the power grid is also smaller.
The arc of the DC arc furnace is stable and concentrated, the molten pool is well stirred, the temperature distribution in the furnace is uniform, and the lining erosion is small.
In contrast, the arc stability of the AC arc furnace is poor, and the molten pool stirring effect may not be as good as that of the DC arc furnace.
The AC arc furnace has a higher power factor than the DC arc furnace, and can be directly powered by the grid power supply without the need for a dedicated DC power supply.
However, due to the uncertainty of the current direction, the AC arc furnace consumes more electrodes than the DC arc furnace, and the electrodes need to be replaced more frequently.
The above is part of the difference between EAF AC arc and DC arc. If you have more insights and questions about this, please feel free to contact us.
